In the 1970s at the Ames Research Center NASA funded a project to develop a substance that could relieve the
astronauts of the tremendous G forces that they were experiencing during liftoff and reentry. The research
scientists believed that the key to reducing these incredible forces on the astronauts bodies was to use a material
made of foam that could conform to the astronauts body shape and hold the conformity during the pressure.
A foam mold was taken of each one of the astronauts bodies to try and accomplish this. But the initial trials
failed because anytime an astronaut would move out of position it would create pressure points against their
bodies. So to rectify this problem they created a different material, called Visco elastic foam, that could conform
to the astronaut's shapes. This foam allowed the astronauts to move out a position and still retain support because
the foam would bounce back to its original shape once pressure was removed. This allowed and even distribution of
pressure of the astronauts body over the entire surface of the Visco elastic foam.
Enter a few Swedish foam companies. A Swedish foam company named Fagerdala, which was one of the largest foam
producing companies in Europe, began experimenting in the early 1980s to perfect the Swedish memory foam for
consumer consumption.
Then in the early 1990s, a mattress company out of Sweden called Tempur-Pedic, introduced the Visco elastic foam
in the form of a mattress to the people of Sweden. The results were so well received that in 1992, this Swedish
Company launched their products in Canada and North America.
Because of the success of Tempur-Pedic with their Swedish memory foam mattress, other manufacturers in United
States and Canada began to create their own mattresses, seat cushions, shoe insoles, and other products to the
general public.
Because of the innovation of the Swedish foam manufacturers this particular type of foam is now prevalent in the
homes of people around the world. Swedish memory foam maybe the most expensive type of foam but it's still the
highest quality that you can purchase.
